Summary of the first couple off weeks.
We have changed our minds several times so far, but we got to Florida on schedule.
Originally we had planned to spend a couple of days in New York, but we decided to do that on our way to Miami, since we were going to fly out from La Guardia. Instead we wanted to go to Montreal, but the train for that day had left when we reached Newark Penn Station, so we got on a train with Boston as its destination. Since Lesley and David did not expect us that early, we decided to get of in a smaller town, and find a cheap motel where we could spend our first night in the US. We ended up in Providence, which is not at all a small town. The city was full due to some kind of event, and the only room we could get, was a very expensive one in a Marriot hotel.

From the hotel we called L&D, and warned them we would come to see them the next day. So we did, and good sports as they are, they managed to come up with an air matress and a double comforter. They have bought an old house which they have totally stripped from the inside, but we did have somewhere to sleep, and a roof above us to protect us from rain :-) We kind of felt like home, since I have been renovating old houses myself the last 20 years. Bob & Carolyn had spent some time there, helping out, and were going home that day. We were happy to send some of our stuff with them to California, to make our backpacks easier to carry.

After four nice days in Boston, with sightseeing on an amfibie vehicle, a train shop and a historical tour, we finally went along to Montreal. We took the Vermonter up, spent two nights in Montreal, and took the Adirondack back down. Montreal is a nice city, the center is relatively small, which made it easy for us to get around without getting lost.

On our way from Montreal to Ohio, we wanted to see the Niagara Falls. But it was very inconvenient to get there by train, thus we decided to postpone it, and went directly to Sandusky, Ohio.

My second cousin Mary and her husband have built a house on a small island in Lake Erie, in the community of Marblehead. The nearest city is Sandusky. They picked us up at the station at seven AM, after spending an hour waiting for our delayed train! We spent three lovely days with them. Some of the highlights here were a model train store with a LOT of models running, a train museum and the Cedar Point Amusement Park.

It was still very inconvinient to get to Niagara Falls, so we decided to go to Washington DC instead. And instead of staying in DC, Jim got us a hotel reservation in the nearby city Alexandria. Once there, we found it silly to go up to New York by train to fly down to Miami, and again changed our plans. We decided to skip New York and go by train directly to Ft Lauderdale. Again we are talking about changing plans, and go directly from here to Edmonton. But we do stick to the original main schedule, and are still planning to get to Edmonton september 20th. And do not worry, Glenn, we WILL be in California in due time for the veteran train weekend!
