Places we have stayed
We have tried all kinds of accomodation, from shabby backpackers too luxury hotels.
So far, we have two favorites:

Ossies Backpackers in Alice Springs is the best in that class. The place is clean, with nice communal areas, friendly staff and two pet kengaroos in the back yard :-) A light breakfast is included in the price, which is AUD 34 for a twin room.

The best hotel, without competition, is the one we are staying in right now: The Albert Park Hotel in Brisbane. The owner / manager himself came to pick us up at the train station, since their coach had gotten stuck in a traffic jam on its way back from the airport with other guests. Both the owners, husband and wife, are visible. That is, they are there amidst their staff and guests, working, talking and taking care of things. The atmosphere is very friendly. The food is excellent the rooms are large and the prices are reasonable. Prices vary depending on which agent you use for booking, we got a very good deal of AUD 82 pr. night. (The first time we were in Sydney, we paid AUD 70 for a small room in a place that called itself a hotel, but the standard was that of a backpackers, with shared facilities.)

We leave for Fraser Island, Rockhampton and the Great Barrier Reef tomorrow morning, but we have already booked nine new nights at Albert Park when we get back to Brisbane 20 january.
